Back in 1995, I attended one of the first conferences on the new World Wide Web.  It was one of those events where you feel that something very important is just around the corner.

One of the keynote speakers was an editor from the new “Wired” Magazine who proclaimed that the new Web was a completely new communications paradigm – and that the old, traditional marketing techniques and practices were no longer valid.

Most of us believed that at first glance.  But as time wore on, it became very obvious that marketing on the Web is still marketing.  Brand building on the Web is still brand building.  The only thing that changed was the medium of delivery.

Today, we all should have learned that the basics of marketing that have been proven over time are still valid.  Let’s look at what the Small Business Administration says about Marketing 101:

In order to successfully grow your business, you’ll need to attract and then work to retain a large base of satisfied customers. Marketing emphasizes the value of the customer to the business, and has two guiding principles:

1.            All company policies and activities should be directed toward satisfying customer needs.

2.            Profitable sales volume is more important than maximum sales volume.
